RV Insurance

What it is?

Recreational vehicle insurance is insurance coverage that applies to different types of vehicles used for recreational purposes. The coverage can cover just the vehicle or can also be extended to cover injuries, property damage, emergency expenses, and more. Types of vehicles covered include boats and other watercraft, off-road vehicles, snowmobiles, RVs, collector cars, and airplanes.

Who it is for

This type of insurance is specifically designed for owners of recreational vehicles, which include — but are not limited to — vehicles that are not covered under other policies. Travel trailers or RVs, for example, may only be partially covered under typical auto insurance policies, or they may not be covered at all. There are cases when coverage is mandatory.

How it works

Recreational vehicle insurance is categorized by the type of vehicle you are trying to cover, how many vehicles you need coverage for, the value of the vehicles, your desired level of protection, and so forth. These factors help determine your policy’s premium.

To reduce cost, some policies can be tailored specifically for your needs. For example, some policies that cover RVs can be activated only when you take your vehicles on vacation. Premiums can be discounted under certain circumstances, if, for example, your vehicle includes safety features such as airbags, anti-theft devices.

Different types of coverage in existence

There are different policies for different categories of recreational vehicles. Off-road vehicle insurance, for instance, can include recreational vehicles such as snowmobiles, golf carts, ATVs, and dirt bikes. Different types of watercraft may be covered under one policy, RVs and travel trailers may be included under one policy, and so forth.

Major benefits

Coverage offers a number of benefits specific to the type of vehicle you are covering. Policies often include the expected liability protection for physical damage, wreck removal, and towing. Policies can also provide 24-hour roadside assistance and protect your assets and family against financial hardship if you are legally liable.
